Gavin McClurg is no stranger to adventure and exploration. He is a 2015 National Geographic “Adventurer of the Year” for his unpowered paragliding expedition across the Canadian Rockies. He became the first person to traverse the full length of the Alaska Range by foot and paraglider (unsupported) in 2016. He is the owner, founder and Captain of “Offshore Odysseys”, a global kitesurfing/surfing/sailing expedition. He has twice circumnavigated the world by sail, living at sea for 13 straight years, including short-handed roundings of both notorious capes (Horn and Good Hope). Gavin holds the current North American-record for foot launched cross-country paragliding, a flight of 240 miles deep into Montana from his home town of Sun Valley, Idaho. Gavin is the first American to complete the “toughest adventure race on Earth”, the Red Bull X-Alps a paragliding / foot race across the Alps from Salzburg to Monaco.

Seriously tight launch! No room for error. I like the heads up display from that Garmin camera. Beautiful terrain, those limestone formations are crazy looking. It's also interesting that that Niviuk wing did not have handles on the rear risers.

Just came back to this again. The foreshadowing @42:50 regarding Kiwi is sobering.
I just got into the idea of paragliding. As I look into this new world after sailing for so long I learn now much its about the same just over land. Today i just learned about X-Alps. I was blown away with what everyone on that race is able to do. It's so much more then just "Go" it's a chess game with the weather, speed, and strength. I am very glad to have to there to wave the American flag. There could not be a better ambassador to the USA then someone who wins an award for sportsmanship. I hope that you will be going in for this years Red Bull X-Alps and if i see you there, i promess to do a tandom flight here in San Diego California and send you the photo to support you in your run. I know that Christian guy is not really a human and it's hard to beat a robot. LoL I would like to see you make it in the top 5 this year. I know that you can do it. From one US Navy Sailor to a Flying pro. You got this. I don't have enough money to be there in person with you however i will be here watching and chearing you on. Good luck to you.

Every spring I come back to this video and every time I learn something new. This is pure gold!
I so want to vol biv the Sierra’s, I really want to cross the Sierra’s from Owens Valley to lemon cove or somewhere around visalia, porterville, anywhere on west side. But I’ve just got my P2 only two mountain flights so far, so I got lots of flying and learning to do before attempting something like that.
